Starting as a Christian-based not-for-profit independent educational charity organization in 2010. The Institute of Counseling has been at the forefront of making an impact in society, considering the role that counseling plays in shaping society as a whole. Almost every area of counseling is either undeveloped or non-existence in Africa, a situation that should be treated as an emergency considering the alarming rate of violence, depression, poverty, and mental health issues in society.
Institute of counseling has been a trailblazer in making sure society gets the needed support in the area of counseling, we ride on partnership with both local and international bodies to achieve the enormous task of having a sane society in an environment where everything seems to be upside down.

YOU ARE NOT ALONE CAMPAIGN (PROFESSIONAL MENTAL HEALTH INTERVENTIONS FOR SCHOOLS)
The emotional and psychological needs of school-age children most especially in their teenage years are so numerous and every institution of learning that wants to create and maintain a culture of wellness and excellence must pay quality attention to the emotional and psychological well-being of students in order to prevent various factors that hinder excellence in an academic environment through the help of professional counselors.
Recent researches suggest one in six students aged 5 to 16 years are currently experiencing one or more psychological, emotional or social difficulties, and less than 10% of them have access to therapeutic help. Unfortunately, students in their teenage years find it difficult to open up about their personal challenges to familiar faces such as teachers and even the school counselor. It is therefore imminent for every success-focused school to be more creative with the provision of therapeutic help
With this program, we provide access to early identification of psychological, emotional, and social challenges; prevention programs, and various treatment options. We help to develop an integrated, comprehensive program of support and services aimed at:
- Supporting the school in raising optimally functional children and adolescents.
- Developing evidence-based programs to provide positive school culture and promote student skills in dealing with bullying and conflicts, solving problems, developing healthy peer relationships, engaging in activities to prevent suicide and substance use, and so on.
- Developing early intervention services for students in need of additional support to deal with grief, anger, anxiety, sadness, and so on.
- Developing treatment programs and services that address the various mental health needs of students.
- Developing a school culture in which teachers and other student support staff are trained to recognize the early warning signs of cognitive, behavioral, emotional, and social issues in their students.
- Developing a referral process to ensure that all students have equal access to services and support.
- Reducing the rate of dysfunctional families by developing student and family support and resources.
Experience has shown that school managements usually use a fire brigade approach, running from pillar to post whenever there is a crisis in their schools, how about preventive measures that help take the mental health of students seriously before things get out of hand? YOU ARE NOT ALONE CAMPAIGN is a game changer in school counseling, enough of the unproductive and outdated counseling styles, and the institute presents you with a robust program that put the mental wellbeing of the student as priorities. PAM(PLEASURE AFTER MUTILATION): AN INTERVENTION PROGRAM FOR WOMEN WHO HAVE UNDERGONE FGM
Unfortunately, according to New York Times, 2 million additional cases of Female Genital Mutilation may occur over the next decade as a result of Covid 19. COVID-19 has shuttered schools and thereby disrupting programs that help protect girls from this harmful practice.
FGM is widely practiced in Nigeria, and with its large population, Nigeria has the highest absolute number of cases of FGM in the world, accounting for about one-quarter of the estimated 115–130 million circumcised women worldwide. In Nigeria, FGM has the highest prevalence in the south-south (77%) (among adult women), followed by the southeast (68%) and southwest (65%), but practiced on a smaller scale in the north, paradoxically tending to in a more extreme form. Nigeria has a population of 150 million people with the women population forming 52%. The national prevalence rate of FGM is 41% among adult women. Prevalence rates progressively decline in the young age groups and 37% of circumcised women do not want FGM to continue. 61% of women who do not want FGM said it was a bad harmful tradition and 22% said it was against religion. Other reasons cited were medical complications (22%), painful personal experience (10%), and the view that FGM is against the dignity of women (10%). However, there is still considerable support for the practice in areas where it is deeply rooted in local tradition.
I did a recent poll on FGM on social media, from people’s responses, it is obvious that Female Genital Mutilation is still going on in Africa and of course in Nigeria, even though The mental health, as well as the physical complications, are huge and devastating. If there are a lot of people advocating for this and creating awareness, this act will help people have a different mindset.
A tweet at a time called for a campaign for men never to marry a woman who has been mutilated, this is more like double punishment, especially for those who wished to be married. It is no news that a lot of women who have undergone FGM struggles with sexual pleasure, some are frigid and a lot have given up on sexual intimacy giving room to a complete lack of desire. This learned helplessness has broken many homes and left others frustrated. If you are struggling with pleasure or orgasm as a result of circumcision, kindly join this highly discreet and confidential group. THE WHOLESOME NIGERIA PROJECT
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in four Nigerians - about 50 million people - are suffering from some sort of mental illness. In fact, about 7 million Nigerians are diagnosed with depression annually which makes Nigeria Africa’s most depressed country already. Also, National Depression Report revealed that 31.6 percent of the population reported symptoms of depression in 2018.
The World Health Organization, WHO also discovered that an estimated 800,000 people die by suicide annually, and Nigeria being the 7th largest nation in the world now ranks 15th in the world in the frequency of suicide.
Despite having a population of over 180 million, there are fewer than 200 psychiatrists in Nigeria — or just one for every 1 million people, (BioMed Central, 2016). The saddest fact; According to Dr. Auwal Sani Salihu (2019), 6 out of 10 Nigerian women are suffering from mental challenges. This indicates that 59.5 million out of 99.1 million women in Nigeria are suffering from one mental health challenge or the other
THERE IS NO HEALTH WITHOUT MENTAL HEALTH. For policies to be effective and the numerous efforts of the government to yield the expected results, the people need a complete mind shift. Some of the challenges being faced by Nigerians are the obvious demonstration of the state of mental health of the citizens;
- -Drug abuse menace among the youth
- -Gambling addiction
- -High rate of domestic violence and sexual abuse,
- -Militancy and Criminality
- -Suicidal ideation
- -Kidnapping & Banditry
- -Get rich quick syndrome of the youth
- -Bullying & Dysfunctional Family issues
- -Depression and anxiety disorder etc.
This program aims at propagating the psychological and emotional wellness of Nigerians especially women and youths. It will be launched into the societies with the following in focus:
- Complete mind shift for better perspectives and actions
- Behavioral modifications
- Facilitate optimal functionality
- Reduce the rate of mental health dysfunction in the society
- Creation of mental health awareness among Lagosians
- Increasing the availability of mental health experts in Lagos State
- Job creation and empowerment as counselors and psychotherapists
- Career development for existing mental health experts.
- Special emphasis on Women and Youth's mental wellbeing
- A wholesome Nigeria.
We intend to partner with state governments to make this project a reality, the idea is to train professional mental health counselors who will mount a mental health desk in every primary and secondary school as well as community health centers in the country.
TEEN SUBSTANCE ABUSE AWARENESS PROGRAM (TESSAP)
With a focus on the obvious vacuum in the area of proper awareness of sexual and substance abuse in our society, the Institute of counseling has decided to take the bull by the horn by taking the awareness to senior secondary schools in Lagos state. We believe that capturing teenagers and young adults will go a long way in solving these societal ills. TESSAP aimed to reach out to teens between the age group of 13-18 years i.e. mostly senior secondary school students. This age group has been targeted by various studies and has found the 13-18 years age group to be the most vulnerable to sexual and substance abuse.
The Program, which is a major communication initiative in Lagos on Teen Substances and Sexual Abuse Awareness, aims to reach over 500 schools and 500 thousand teens over the next few years. It was launched in September 2015 by the above-named organizations.
Teen sexual abuse is a public health problem of epidemic proportions and an alarming and serious concern for both the social work and the medical fields. More than two decades of research have linked teen sexual abuse to increased rates of pregnancy, promiscuity, low self-esteem, obesity, anxiety, depression, anger and aggression, post-traumatic stress, dissociation, sexual difficulties, sexually transmitted diseases, self-injurious behaviors, substance abuse and so on.
